When putting together the Grand Prize package for the new “You be the Judge” art contest, I wanted to include items that have inspired me over the years, in hopes of helping to inspire others to pursue their studies in art and strive to reach their own goals.

Whenever I’m in need of a shot of encouragement and inspiration, I will often pick up an art book and look at the work of master painters. Seeing how another artist solved problems on canvas gives me hope that I can overcome these same problems in my own work. Looking at great paintings also gives me an insight as to what’s possible in paint.

For those who are looking for an art book that will inspire you to pick up a paint brush and start on your own masterpiece, I highly recommend Dan Gerhartz’s book Not Far from Home. I’ve written about Dan’s work in another blog which included some of my favorite paintings from this book. For those who may not be familiar with his work, here are a few more examples:

I had the opportunity to meet Dan last summer at his studio in Kewaskum, Wisconsin and was very impressed by his character and willingness to share some of his knowledge, techniques and experiences of painting with me. After talking with him for about an hour or so, I realized that the unique and inspirational qualities that I had seen in each of his paintings was merely a reflection of the man, himself. The same high standards that go into each of his paintings run parallel to the standards by which he lives. After our meeting, I walked away with an even greater appreciation for both him and his work.

I’m excited about having the opportunity to share some of Dan’s inspiring work with others as part of this new art contest.

Dan Gerhartz has donated a copy of his book Not Far from Home as part of the Grand Prize for the new “You be the Judge” art contest. When it comes to quality, this book is by far one of the best that I’ve seen in recent years and contains some of the best reproductions available. Each one is clear and in focus, which is important when studying a painting. The color is as true to the original as you can get.

The book is a hard cover edition which contains 175 pages and includes 128 full color images and a foreword by Richard Schmid. As an added bonus, this book is hand signed by Dan Gerhartz.

You can see more of Dan’s work, as well as his “Technical Insights” which discusses the techniques and thinking process that went into the painting of several works from his book at www.danielgerhartz.com.
